psychiatry

at the

North Goa district hospital

, Mapusa, organised an awareness talk to mark the

World Suicide Prevention Day

(September 10), on Tuesday. With the moto of love you Zindagi (Love you life), the theme of the talk was ‘let us work together to prevent suicide.’

Senior

psychiatrist

and nodal officer of DTC Dr Rajesh Dhume, a teacher, writer, translator and Sahitya Akademi awardee Prashanti Talpankar, journalist Danuska Da Gama and doctors from the department of psychiatry addressed the attendees, mostly college students.

Stating that people attempt

suicide

because of depression, Dr Dhume said, “We can break the stigma of

depression

only by opening ourselves about it to others.”

Other speakers narrated their experience of dealing with depression.

“I suffered from depression at the age of thirty. I was not loving and respecting myself,” Talpankar said, adding, “The onus of coming out of depression is on us, and we have to change the way our brain functions.”
