State to hire 390 teachers for govt primary schools
Panaji: The Goa staff selection commission (SSC) on Friday announced the recruitment of 390 govt primary school teachers, including Konkani and Marathi teachers. State govt took this decision in light of the reduction in enrolment to govt primary schools, a phenomenon attributed to teacher numbers.
According to the Union education ministry’s unified district information system for education report, 2024-25, the number of students enrolled in private unaided schools in Goa for the first time surpassed the number of children studying in govt-run schools.

There are 41,146 children studying in Goa’s private unaided but recognised institutions, higher than the 35,974 students enrolled in govt schools. The number of govt schools, from primary to higher secondary level in Goa, is 773, five times the figure of private unaided schools, 141.
The highest number of students in Goa still remain enrolled in 558 institutions run privately with govt aid, or aided schools, with student numbers of 2.2 lakh. However, there was a visible shift of these students to unaided schools. Most private unaided schools are affiliated with central boards like CISCE and CBSE. There are also 4,464 students enrolled in five Kendriya Vidyalayas in Goa and 779 students in 2 Navodaya Vidyalayas, which are central govt-run schools.
Of the 141 private unaided schools in Goa, 99 are exclusively primary level schools, while the remaining have upper primary, secondary, and higher secondary sections attached.
During the previous year’s UDISE report for 2023-24, there were 40,810 students studying in private unaided schools in Goa, a number which has now increased. There is almost a simultaneous decrease in the latest report in students from govt-aided schools, from 2.2 lakh in 2023-24 to 2.1 lakh in the latest report. This appears to back the CM’s statement of a gradual increase in the shift of students from govt-aided to private schools.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant, at the official teachers’ day event, said that there are now more students studying in 141 private schools in Goa than in 773 govt schools. Sawant appealed to parents to admit students to govt-run and govt-aided schools. Sawant said that many govt and aided schools have better infrastructure and teachers with the latest training compared to some of the private schools
