PANAJI: The Income Tax (I-T) department will take appropriate action against those who have deposited

unaccounted money

in various

bank accounts

if they fail to declare the same by March 31 under the Pradhan Mantri

Garib Kalyan Yojana

2016.

The I-T department has, so far, issued notices to over 500 people, including individuals and

corporate sector

in the state and searched/surveyed around 30 people to unearth deposits of unaccounted money.

Principal commissioner of Income Tax, Alka Tyagi told reporters that the response to the scheme so far has been poor. “Either people are not aware of consequences or they don’t care,” she added, warning that irrespective of whether declarations are made or not, the department is already in possession of the information. “We will go after them. Then the consequence will be very harsh,” Tyagi warned.
