Sanvordem pushes back bandhara with full-vote resolution

Margao: The Sanvordem gram sabha unanimously passed a resolution opposing the proposed Rs 280 crore bandhara to be built across the river at Mirabag.

The gram sabha witnessed an uproar over the project as villagers demanded to know from the panchayat how a NOC was issued for the project without consulting them. They said that the project will cause flooding and thus “destroy” the village.

“The villagers were kept in the dark about the project. Considering the mammoth cost of the project, it’s not just a bandhara but a dam. A large number of mangroves have already been cut for the project. We came to know about the project only after the water resources department (WRD) invited tenders for its construction,” a gram sabha member said.

Sarpanch Chinmayi Naik told reporters that, due to opposition from the villagers, the panchayat has revoked the project’s conditional NOC.
