Sanjivani pays 75% dues to Karnataka cane farmers

PONDA: Karnataka-based sugarcane farmers have decided to call off their proposed agitation after Sanjivani Cooperative Sugar Factory cleared a major portion of unpaid dues on Thursday.
The farmers had planned to block Goan canes from being transported to Khanapur sugar factory. However, the decision to call off the protest would be taken only after the amount is credited to their bank accounts.
Irked with the failure to pay their dues by Dharbandora-based sugar factory by Friday despite assurances that the payment would be done by Monday, Karnataka-based sugarcane farmers had threatened to stop the trucks to Khanapur sugar factory if there is any further delay.
Sanjivani officials said 75% of the amount totaling around Rs 1.4 crore of the dues has already been deposited in their respective bank accounts through RTGS, while some cheques have also been issued to those whose account details were not recorded with the factory. A total of 512 Karnataka farmers had supplied 17,491 tonne of sugarcane to Sanjivani during the last crushing season between December 13, 2018 and February 28, 2019.
Stating that they had not received any amount from Sanjivani in their bank accounts by Thursday, Maruti Gundoli, a member of Rayat Sangh, Khanapur that supplied canes to Sanjivani said that they would again check with the banks on Friday.
