PANAJI: For the first time in the eight-odd years since the Samba Square festival has been organised as an extension of the Carnival festivities in Panaji, the event will wind up at 10pm in keeping with the High Court directives on the music deadline.
The Samba Square features live bands, besides food and entertainment stalls at the Jardim de Garcia da Orta, Panaji, and will be held from Saturday to Tuesday.
While the music will stop at 10pm on the first three days, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has managed to extend the last day’s deadline to 12am. The last day of the Samba Square features the traditional Red and Black dance and marks the culmination of the four-day Samba Square and Carnival festivities.
“There is a high court order that we cannot violate. The events will start at 6.30pm and we will ensure that the music stops at 10pm on the first three days,” Panaji mayor Rohit Monserrate told TOI.
The Goa Carnival 2023 will be celebrated from February 18-21 at four major locations in the state — Panaji, Mapusa, Margao and Vasco.
The Panaji carnival is scheduled to be held on February 18 and will be led by King Momo, followed by a long trail of dancers and acrobats dressed in Carnival colours. Once the procession is over, the participants as well as revellers usually head to the Samba Square.
The extravaganza includes culinary delights, pop-up shops featuring products by talented entrepreneurs from the state, music and dance featuring performances by a host of local bands and musicians.
Thousands of Goans and tourists alike flock to the four-day festival.
