An elderly couple from Karanpur village in Azamgarh district committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. Continuous disputes with their daughter-in-law and strained family relations led to the tragic incident.
VARANASI: Upset over frequent disputes with their sons and daughter-in-law, an elderly couple ended their lives by jumping before a moving train in the Sidhari area in Azamgarh district.
SO Sidhari Shashi Chand Chaudhary on Wednesday said that, upon being alerted by railway officials on Tuesday early morning, bodies were recovered from the railway track and sent for postmortem examination after ascertaining their identity as Basanta (72) and Barti Devi (68) of Karanpur village under Jahanaganj police station. An investigation was started to determine the actual reason why the elderly couple committed suicide, he added.
During the initial investigation by the police, it came to light that Basanta lived at his ancestral home with his wife Barti Devi, their younger son, and the wife of their elder son, who worked away from home.
According to villagers, the elderly couple frequently had disputes with their daughter-in-law. On Sunday night, they quarrelled again, after which the elderly couple left, telling some villagers that they would never return.
Villagers alerted their younger son about it, but he took it casually. On the other hand, the couple reached Sidhari Halt in the early hours on Tuesday and jumped in front of a moving train.
Upon noticing their bodies, locals alerted railway officials, who informed Sidhari police about the incident. With the spread of news of their deaths, their daughter-in-law fled the home.
