Rural Goa sees three times as many fatal accidents as its urban areas
Panaji: Goa’s rural areas accounted for three times the number of fatal accidents as compared to urban areas, as per the traffic police’s accident analysis for 2025. A total of 215 people died in accidents in rural areas, compared to 58 in urban areas. Most fatal accidents — 247 — took place during clear and sunny skies, the analysis reveals.
The year 2025 saw a total of 2,370 accidents, of which 262 were fatal, resulting in the death of 273.
Most of these accidents were due to over-speeding, the analysis said.
Also, most accidents were reported between 1 pm and 4 pm, and 98 fatal accidents were reported close to residential areas.
Traffic SP Prabodh Shirvoikar said that there was an overall reduction in fatal accidents and fatalities in 2025 compared to 2024. He added that the traffic cell sends proposals to PWD to take necessary steps with regard to road engineering to avoid accidents. He also said that the traffic cell takes up enforcement and education activities to decrease accidents.
“I appeal to the people of the state to wear helmets, and even pillion riders should wear helmets for their safety. Drivers should strictly wear seat belts, including co-passengers. People should follow traffic rules without fail and avoid mixing drinking and driving,” he said.
An analysis of accidents in 2024 by the traffic cell revealed that maximum number of accidents occurred between 6pm and 7pm. A police officer said that more accidents occur after office hours, indicating that everyone is in a hurry to reach home. The traffic cell said that most accidents were reported on Mondays, 16.5%, followed by Sundays,14.5%.
A senior police officer said that Monday being the first day of the week, people speed to reach office and could be one of the reasons for maximum accidents.
