Raj Bhavan will now be known as Lok Bhavan
Panaji: Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Thursday renamed Raj Bhavan, Goa, as Lok Bhavan, Goa. He said the change is a thoughtful step away from colonial-era terminology.
“Lok Bhavan, meaning ‘people’s house’, stands as a symbol of transparency, inclusiveness and our unwavering dedication to serving the citizens of Goa. Lok Bhavan represents a deep commitment to serving the people, an institution where every citizen can feel a sense of belonging. It is not just a seat of administrative authority, but a place that holds the hopes, expectations, and trust of every Goan. Lok Bhavan will genuinely work for the people, with the people, and in service of the people,” he said in his Liberation Day message.
The governor said Dec 19, 1961, is the most significant day in Goan history.
“This historic occasion highlights the importance of unity, courage and resilience in the pursuit of independence. It also stands as a powerful reminder of Goa’s rich heritage and its remarkable journey towards becoming a vibrant and progressive state,” the governor said.
He further added, “As we all know, for more than 450 years, Goa lived under colonial domination. During this long and difficult period, generations of Goans witnessed profound cultural, social and political challenges. Though the land was beautiful, Goan people lived without the autonomy and dignity that are the birthright of every human being. Yet, beneath this prolonged period of suppression, the desire for self-determination continued to grow quietly in some hearts and courageously in others.”
The governor said that this year, Goa marked remarkable achievements that reflected the people’s aspirations: it achieved the milestone of 100% literacy, becoming one of the few fully literate states in the country.
“This is a landmark of our journey of empowerment. It represents not merely the ability to read and write, but the unlocking of human potential, dignity and opportunity for every Goan,” he said.
