Post-monsoon surplus soars to 146% amid brisk showers

Panaji: The combined effect of a low pressure area over northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal and a well-marked low pressure area over eastcentral and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea continued, as the wet spell continued into Nov with heavy rain in some areas.

Both systems had cyclonic circulation extending up to 3.1km above mean sea level in Bay of Bengal and 5.8km over Arabian Sea.


Dharbandora recorded heavy rainfall of 66.2mm, the heaviest among 13 centres, but rainfall figures of six centres— Quepem, Margao, Old Goa, Valpoi and Sanquelim, some of which also reported intense rain activity were not available.

During the last 24 hours till Saturday morning, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji, recorded state average of 38.2mm, though addition of rain figures in six centres will raise it higher.

Other centres recorded moderate rainfall, as Pernem and Dabolim received 49+mm each, Ponda 45mm, Mapusa 35.4mm, Panaji 30.2mm, Mormugao 28.6mm and Sanguem just 8.2mm.

On Saturday, the post-monsoon total soared to 409.3mm, as compared to the normal value of 166.3mm— an abundant surplus of 146.1%.

Moderate rainfall is likely in most places on Sunday while light rain with thunderstorms may occur at many places till Nov 5.
