India and New Zealand are nearing the conclusion of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a major milestone in strengthening bilateral economic ties. After meeting New Zealand’s Trade Minister Todd McClay, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said negotiations had advanced significantly, with only a few issues left to settle. The agreement aims to enhance cooperation in trade, technology, education, defence, agriculture, and food processing. Goyal said it would be especially beneficial for farmers, fishermen, and small businesses in both nations. McClay noted that the FTA discussions had progressed faster than any other trade negotiation for New Zealand, with five rounds completed in just seven months. He added that two-way trade had already grown by 10 per cent over the past year. Both ministers emphasised that the FTA would be long-term, balanced, and complementary, supporting India’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
