Goa’s Douglas excels at international scrabble: Goa’s Douglas Lobo displayed fine skill and strategy to emerge second at the 11th iGate International Scrabble Championship held in Bangalore last week. World champion Nigel Richards of New Zealand bagged the top spot. While Lobo won 23 of the 35 games played, Richards had 32 in his kitty. Sri Lanka’s national champion Lakshan Wanniarachi finished third with 21 wins, while Nigeria’s Rashid Balogun (20 wins) came fifth. Two of Lobo’s best plays were ‘assegais’ (plural, to pierce with a light spear) and ‘eudaemons’ (plural, a good spirit), while Richards came up with words like ‘zapateados’ (plural, rhythmic tapping and stamping of the heels) and ‘asafetida’ (a brownish bitter foul smelling resinous material obtained from the roots of several plants). By virtue of this performance Lobo leapfrogged to second position in the Indian ratings, one notch below Sherwin Rodrigues who occupies the top. Rodrigues claimed the fourth spot in the iGate tournament with 20 wins and a draw. The other Goan scrabblers who represented India were Rajiv Antao, Joe Rodrigues, Anthony Gomes, Erol Jorge and Sylvia Coelho. Business unit head of iGate Global Solutions, Nagasamy Pitchai, gave away the prizes.
