India Post launches penguins of Antarctica postcards
Panaji: India Post, in collaboration with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, launched six special picture postcards featuring penguins of Antarctica on Dec 9. The postcards feature images of penguins and are expected to become a valuable piece of memorabilia for science enthusiasts and philatelists.
The postcards will travel to Bharati and Maitri stations in Antarctica during the 44th Indian Scientific Expedition and will be available for sale upon the return of the expedition to Goa in late 2025.
The launch took place in Mumbai at the General Post Office (GPO) in the presence of the secretary of posts, Vandita Kaul, and the chief postmaster general of Maharashtra, Amitabh Singh.
Director of postal services for the Goa region, R P Patil, and director of NCPOR, Thamban Meloth, were also present for the virtual release event from NCPOR’s headquarters in Goa. The team from Bharati station also attended the virtual ceremony and will play a key role in sending these postcards to Antarctica as part of the 44th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (ISEA).
The postcards will travel to Bharati and Maitri stations in Antarctica with the expedition, set to depart in mid-Dec 2024. Upon the expedition’s return to Goa in late 2025, the postcards will be made available for sale, allowing people to purchase a unique piece of India’s scientific history.
