PANAJI: Rastra Mogi Goemkar (RMG), a forum formed to crack the whip against those holding dual citizenship, demanded that the election authorities delete names of all those who have acquired Portuguese citizenship, from the electoral rolls before the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The demand was made when a delegation of the forum led by joint convenor Suresh Pilarnkar, former bureaucrat, called on joint election commissioner Narayan Navti and submitted a memorandum listing out their demands.
They demanded that the deletion of names should be done prior to preparing the electoral rolls for the parliamentary election.
RMG secretary Jitesh Kamat, who was part of the delegation, said that Navti informed the delegation that names of 3,000 persons who obtained Portuguese citizenship had been deleted from the rolls. Navti also said that letters had been sent to the Portuguese consulate requesting information about people whose names are registered with the central registry of Portugal in Lisbon, but the consulate had not responded so far.
Kamat added that some "sincere people" holding Portuguese citizenship had registered themselves with the Foreigners' Registration Office (FRO) in Goa after surrendering their Indian citizenship and got their names deleted from the electoral roll which is only 10% and further warned that RMG will not rest till 100% of the names are deleted.
Pilarnkar stated that if the Portuguese consulate does not cooperate with the government authorities then they have no moral right to continue their activities in Goa and the government of Goa should rethink the existence of the consulate here. The delegation also included Satyen Mhapsekar, Ramesh Matkar, Prabhav Kamat and others. RMG will also submit the memorandum to the chief secretary to initiate action against persons holding Portuguese citizenship and working in the administration of the state and in any kind of government service as it is "harmful for the security of our country", stated a press note issued by the RMG secretary.
