Five-day winter session of state assembly from Jan 12
Panaji: Goa governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Tuesday summoned a 5-day winter session of the state legislative assembly starting Jan 12. The first day will comprise the governor’s address. From the second day onwards, govt business will include passing supplementary demands and govt bills.
State govt will answer questions, including starred questions, besides introducing and passing govt bills during the session. The assembly session will be on the backdrop of the ZP election results scheduled for Dec 22. The detailed business will be decided at the business advisory committee (BAC) meeting.
The opposition will get the opportunity to raise various pressing issues, including the safety and security in the tourism industry after the fire incident at Birch by Romeo Lane at Arpora, where 25 people died.
The results of the ZP election will also help both the ruling and opposition parties in case they win. A political observer said that if the opposition is able to secure victory in the ZP election, they will get an opportunity in the assembly to corner govt. In case the ruling party wins the election, they will counter the opposition's criticism by stating that people are with them, the political observer added.
Leader of opposition Yuri Alemao hit out at govt and said that govt does not want to face the opposition on the floor of the house on burning issues of the state. “With the winter session of the eighth legislative assembly summoned, and that too for just five days including the governor’s address, I am committed to fighting for our Goem and our people,” Alemao said.
He said that they expected the govt would be afraid to summon a session for more than a week. “However, we will unitedly grill this corrupt govt over their failures, dadagiri, illegalities, misuse of power, and collapsed administration,” Alemao said.
