QUEPEM: An initiative to collect material and basic requirements from well-wishers and distribute them to the needy under the banner of ‘
Smart
Sanvorcotto’ - award of the
Cuncolim
municipal council - has brought smiles to the faces of several residents here.
On Monday, 40 senior citizens were handed umbrellas by John Fernandes, a first-time councillor who formed the ‘Smart
Sanvorcotto
’ concept along with a group of citizens. “The programme is being implemented with the help of donors from the
ward
and those who have connections here but are based elsewhere,” said Fernandes.
He also said that the programme has been active throughout the pandemic and has helped home-quarantined patients and their families with rations, meals, steamers, nebulizers. Rations will also be provided to widows next month.
“We want to make it clear that donations to buy umbrellas came from a Sanvorcotto resident and no politician has contributed money for the purchase. Another well-wisher has donated LED lights under the Smart Sanvorcotto illumination mission. These have been installed at different junctions and religious places,” Fernandes said.
“From April, Sanvorcotto was on the mission to make it a ‘smart place’ without help from the government and we are well on-track. After the municipal elections, we first installed convex mirrors at six different places and plans are afoot to install some CCTV cameras,” said Banbina Andrade in-charge of women’s cell.
