Cultivation boom: Marigold production soars by 30 tonnes
Panaji: The production of marigold flowers in the state saw a surge this year, with total output reaching 180 tonnes, marking an increase of 30 tonnes compared to the previous year. The rise in production is attributed to a notable expansion in the area under cultivation as well as growing interest among local marigold farmers.
“Last year, we had 25 hectares under cultivation, which produced around 150 tonnes. This year, we’ve expanded to 30 hectares, resulting in a bumper crop of 180 tonnes of flowers,” director of agriculture, Sandeep Faldesai, told TOI. Faldesai further highlighted that the growing popularity of marigold farming has led to an increasing number of farmers taking up the crop. “In the coming year, we plan to expand even further,” he added.
The surge in marigold production is in line with the trend reported by TOI in Oct 2023, which highlighted that the area under marigold cultivation had already grown to 25 hectares from 17 hectares. Marigold flowers, known for their vibrant colours and aromatic fragrance, are an essential part of various cultural and religious celebrations in the state.
The demand for marigolds increases significantly during festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra, and Diwali, as well as during weddings and religious ceremonies. Marigolds are used in the preparation of garlands as loose flowers for offerings and in decorative arrangements.
To encourage more farmers to take up marigold farming, govt provides financial aid of Rs 75,000 per hectare to those willing to dedicate land to the cultivation of the flower. As part of efforts to promote the industry and showcase the potential of marigold farming, a special plot will be set up at Lokotsav, Canacona, in Dec, where marigold flowers will be on display.
“This will allow hinterland farmers to see the process and results firsthand, helping them better understand the potential of marigold farming,” Faldesai said.
