BJP stifling right to free speech: Cong

Panaji: The move to arrest Gujarat’s independent legislator Jignesh Mevani on “flimsy grounds” is yet another instance of BJP stifling the right to free speech, which is enshrined in the Constitution, said Congress on Monday.

Opposition leader Michael Lobo, who chaired a special meeting of the Congress legislature party, said that Mevani’s arrest is similar to Hitler’s crackdown on those who opposed Nazi policies.

“We can see collapse of democracy. We can see that freedom of speech has been throttled. I think all Goans need to think about this incident and realise that such things can happen in Goa,” said Lobo.
