Aug ’25 sees 43% dip in road deaths from Aug ’24
Panaji: The state saw a major drop in deaths due to road accidents and fatal accidents in Aug when compared to the same month in 2024, as there was a 43% decrease in fatal accidents and persons killed in road accidents.
In the first eight months of the year, there was around a 12% decrease in fatal accidents and a 14% decrease in deaths due to road accidents compared to 2024.
Only one pedestrian was killed in a road accident in Aug 2025, compared to four in the same month of the previous year, which is around an 80% decrease.
A total of 1,531 accidents were reported in Goa until Aug 2025, which is around 12% fewer accidents than those in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Though there was a decrease of 10% in fatal accidents until July 2025 in the state compared to the previous year, there is a sign of worry. The number of fatal accidents in July 2025 remained the same as those in July 2024, but there was an increase of 11% in persons killed in road accidents.
A total of 17 fatal accidents were reported in July 2025, and 19 persons were killed in accidents compared to 17 in July 2024. Overall, there was still a decrease of 12% in accidents until July 2025.
The traffic cell wrote to the PWD to take long-term and short-term measures to ensure that accidents are reduced on the roads.
“When an accident is reported, the police inspector concerned visits the site and recommends the necessary changes to avoid accidents in the future,” a senior traffic police officer said. “All the recommendations are then forwarded to the PWD to make corrections on the road.”
An analysis of accidents in 2024 by the traffic cell revealed that the maximum number of accidents occurred between 6 pm and 7 pm.
A senior police officer said that a higher number of accidents occur after office hours as everyone is in a hurry to reach home.
The traffic cell said that the maximum number of accidents were reported on Mondays at 16.5%, followed by Sundays at 14.5%. A senior officer said Monday is the first day of the office week, and most people speed up to reach their offices, which could be one of the reasons for the maximum accidents reported on that day.
