As temperature soars, so do price of lemons at Rs 10/piece

Panaji: As Goa grapples with soaring summer temperatures, lemon prices in Panaji markets have surged sharply with vendors selling the citrus fruit at Rs 8 to Rs 10 per piece, depending on size.


The spike in prices has been attributed to increasing demand, particularly for beverages and home remedies aimed at combating the heatwave-like conditions. Vendors in the state capital said the trend is expected to continue for at least two months as the summer season peaks.


“We can expect prices to drop by half by the end of June,” said vendor Shankar S.


Another vendor said transportation costs and lower arrivals from supplying regions contributed to the rise. “Supply is not matching the demand right now. During summer, lemons always become expensive, but it has never gone above Rs 10 per piece.”


At several roadside stalls and markets, smaller lemons were being sold for around Rs 8 a piece, while larger varieties touched Rs 10 each. Some traders were also offering bulk deals, including 12 lemons for Rs 100, to attract customers while maintaining margins amid fluctuating supply and rising demand.


The sharp rise in temperatures has led to increased consumption of fresh juices, kokum drinks, lime water and other cooling refreshments across Goa. Local beverage sellers and restaurants said demand for lime-based drinks had risen by 20% over the past few days.


The increase has added to household expenses. However, many continued purchasing the citrus fruit.


“How many glasses of lime soda can I keep ordering a day? It is better to buy a few limes and take home,” said Raju Balwant, a customer.


Goa recorded over 36°C in maximum temperatures for two consecutive days, according to the IMD.
