Antonio Mascarenhas, champion of the underprivileged, dies
Panaji: The sports community in Goa and Maharashtra was left to mourn the passing of Antonio Mascarenhas, president of Ave Maria Athletic & Walkers Club, a dedicated figure who worked for the development of football at the grassroots level.
Mascarenhas will be remembered not only as a remarkable athlete but as a selfless mentor whose life was devoted to empowering the next generation.
“His contribution to uplifting underprivileged youth through football will remain a lasting legacy within the community,” said Goa Football Association (GFA) president Caitano Fernandes. " Antonio dedicated his life to giving young footballers a chance to dream and succeed. His work at the grassroots level has left a meaningful impact on the game in Goa. He will be remembered not only for his passion for football but for the lives he touched along the way."
Through Ave Maria Athletic & Walkers Club, Mascarenhas created a nurturing environment for underprivileged and marginalised boys from Khareband and across the Salcete region. “His commitment ensured that these youngsters were not only introduced to football but were also given opportunities to grow through sport and education,” said officials.
Born on May 17, 1961, in Benaulim, Mascarenhas lived a life marked by discipline, excellence and a deep commitment to nurturing young talent.
In his early years, Mascarenhas moved to Mumbai along with his younger brother Sebastian. His formative years were shaped at Antonio D’Souza High School (ANZA), Byculla, where his athletic journey began to flourish.
A gifted sprinter and hurdler, Mascarenhas emerged as one of the finest school athletes of his time and earned him recognition and commendation from the legendary Milkha Singh, a moment that stood as a testament to his athletic excellence.
Once he returned to Goa after a long stint with Qatar Airways, he co-founded Ave Maria Athletic & Walkers Club.
Driven by the powerful motto ‘Save the Child’” the club became a beacon of hope for underprivileged and marginalised youth. Through consistent annual football and athletics training camps, the initiative played a transformative role in shaping young lives, promoting discipline, teamwork, and resilience while steering children away from addictions.
