AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers: Nervous wait for India after 6-0 win against Brunei

India finished their AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a dominant 6-0 win against Brunei Darussalam but will have to wait for other results to know if they are among the qualifiers for next year’s tournament in Saudi Arabia.
India ended with six points, the same as group leaders and hosts Qatar, who take on Bahrain (3 points) in the concluding clash later tonight. Eleven group winners and four best second-placed teams will make the cut.
Vibin Mohanan scored a hat-trick, which included two goals in the first seven minutes, while Mohammed Aimen struck two beautiful goals late in the game from outside the box. Ayush Chhetri also added his name to the scoresheet at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha on Tuesday.
India dominated from start to finish against the bottom-ranked side in the group but could not translate their dominance into a big win, needed to overcome other teams on goal difference. The other teams in the group, Qatar (13-0) and Bahrain (10-0), scored more against Brunei.
If Bahrain defeat Qatar (by not more than two goals) in the last Group H match being played at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, India will finish in the first place in the group, and confirm their qualification, due to a better head-to-head goal difference in the matches involving the top three teams of the group.
Should Qatar get at least a draw against Bahrain, India would have to hope for a UAE victory by four or more goals against Iran in Group I, to finish as one of the four best runners-up.
