3,570 students to answer SET at 7 centres on Sunday
Panaji: On Sunday, altogether 3,570 students from Goa will be appearing for the State Eligibility Test (SET) at seven centres across the state. This high figure shows a heightened interest among youth in Goa to find employment as teachers in colleges and at the university.
Students in Goa answer the Maharashtra State Eligibility Test (M-SET), which is scheduled for April 7, 2024. This examination is jointly conducted by the states of Maharashtra and Goa for the postgraduate students of these states.
This is a qualifying examination for candidates aspiring to become assistant professors in universities and colleges. This time, 3,570 students are appearing for this examination from Goa.
A retired professor said that as the University Grants Commission held NET is much tougher examination to qualify for the post of assistant professor, the local candidates may be opting for the easier state level test.
“To see such huge response of 3,570 students appearing for SET is shocking because they all aim to get employment as college or university teachers. It is an unbelievable number because the huge response shows the trend of every young postgraduate trying to work within the state of Goa only,” he said.
The UGC NET qualifies candidates to find employment in any state or UT and M-SET is only for Goa and Maharashtra.
“This shows that almost 90% Goa University students don’t want to work on even regular jobs outside Goa. This 3,570 is a huge number of postgraduates in a state with 10 lakh adult population,” he said.
Of the 3,570 students registered for the exam, highest of 960 will take the test at the Don Bosco High School in Panaji. Another 600 will answer the test at the Mushtifund High School, Cujira. Additionally, 528 will appear for the M-SET at Vidya Prabodhini School in Porvorim.
The Hedgewar High School and the Rosary High School, both at Cujira, will see 456 and 432 students appear for the test, respectively.
The Salgaocar Law College at Miramar will also witness another 432 students taking the test, and Goa University will also be an exam centre from where 162 students will appear.
