3 Anjuna cops suspended for ‘harassing’ Delhi tourist

Panaji: Goa police on Monday suspended three police personnel attached to the Anjuna traffic cell for allegedly harassing a tourist at Anjuna. All three personnel were shifted to the traffic education cell.

Superintendent of police (SP) of the traffic cell, Prabodh Shirvoikar, suspended assistant sub-inspector Mohan Chopdekar, who was the challaning officer, head constable Govind Mandrekar, and police constable Prashant Shetye.
Shirvoikar said he received a complaint from a Delhi-based tourist that he was unnecessarily stopped by the police personnel at Anjuna and harassed when he was travelling on a rented bike.

Based on the complaint, all three police personnel were placed under suspension pending inquiry.

A preliminary inquiry found that the Delhi-based traveller was stopped, but was not challaned.

The traffic cell SP said there is clear instruction to traffic personnel that they should not unnecessarily stop tourists unless there is a visible violation.
Shirvoikar mentioned that action would be taken against any traffic cell personnel if they were found to be involved in any sort of malpractice.
