13-yr-old drowns in Selaulim canal

Margao: Thirteen-year-old Suresh Jadhav, a resident of Sanguem, drowned in a canal of the Selaulim irrigation project. His body was recovered late Wednesday evening.

Locals said the incident occurred at 4pm when the boy had gone to the canal for a bath. Locals alleged that confusion over jurisdiction between Quepem and Sanguem police led to a delay in recovering the body. Francis Barretto, a local, then dived into the water and retrieved it.

Locals said that many youths go to the canal for a swim but in the absence of a retaining wall it has turned into a risky affair. tnn
