has busted a gang which allegedly cheated people by posing as representatives of private banks and even as officials of Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA).

According to police, the gang used to operate from a bogus call centre that they had set up in Lakshmi Nagar in Delhi.

“They called the victims saying that they were representatives of a bank and sometimes even introduced themselves as officials from IRDA and the Finance Ministry. They used it to assure their victims that their policy have matured and to claim the amount they need to verify their credentials by sharing personal information. They tricked the targets into depositing money in their accounts,” said an official from Ghaziabad police.

He added that the gang worked in a private insurance company in Noida and from there they accessed details about the victim and the information was passed over to their call centre they had set up in Lakshmi Nagar.

The accused had opened bank accounts on forged documents.

There were cases registered at the Indirapuram police station and recently when they made a call to a possible victim they were lured into visiting Kanawani village from where they were arrested on Tuesday afternoon.

“The arrested accused have been identified as Dheeraj Tanwar, Akshay and Huma Khan while the fourth gang member is still at large” the officer said.

He added that while Dheeraj used to make calls to the victims, Akshay managed the call centre while Huma managed the forged paperwork like bank login details, etc, and used to withdraw money from the ATMs.

Police have also recovered a car worth Rs 23 lakh, mobile phones and about Rs 1 lakh cash from their possession.
