Electric pole comes crashing down in Gzb, lineman fixing fault injured

Ghaziabad: A 30-year-old lineman was injured after a cement electric pole fell on him during repairs in the Vijay Nagar area on Tuesday.The lineman was identified as Bablu Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad. Kumar is a contract-based employee in the power department.According to a senior police officer, passersby informed cops that an electrician had been injured while repairing an electric pole in the Vijay Nagar area. Locals, with help from electricity officials, managed to rescue Kumar and brought him to a nearby hospital for medical attention.“After a few hours, he was discharged from the hospital. Later, power department officials began investigating the cause of the incident,” the officer said, adding that no complaint has been received in the case yet.Ashok Sunderum chief engineer zone 1, Ghaziabad power department, PVVNL told TOI that the matter is being investigated. “Preliminary investigation revealed that it was an old cement pole which carried 11kV LT (low tension) line. We don’t know yet how the pole fell. But it appears that a vehicle like a school bus, or something similar, had damaged the pole. In the meantime, we have fixed the pole and restored the supply,” Sunderum said. On June 15, 26-year-old Yunus Khan, a contract-based employee in the power department, was electrocuted while fixing a wire in Dadri, Greater Noida.In Feb 2022, a 40-year-old lineman, Salim, was electrocuted in Manduli village in Muradnagar while repairing a fault in an 11,000 kW power cable.

New tech to detect underground power cable faults

The state's power department acquired an Austrian machine to detect faults in underground power cables, which can detect defects up to 25km. Power minister Dhavalikar stated that few local experts exist for this task. Repairs are slow, and marking utilities is underway. Six contractors are available, and faults will be fixed before Chaturthi, he assured.
