Ghaziabad: The Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) will be out of bounds for heavy vehicles from July 22, when the kanwar yatra is scheduled to start. Traffic police are likely to stop the entry of all vehicles, including private cars, from July 29. The diversion will continue till 8pm on Aug 5.
During the yatra every year, pilgrims from Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad use the DME to head to Haridwar and bring Ganga water from there on their way back to the Dudheswar Nath temple in Ghaziabad. Piyush Singh, ADCP (traffic), said no truck, bus or any other heavy vehicle will be allowed on the DME from July 22.
“Vehicles coming from Delhi (Tulsi Niketan, Seemapuri and Anand Vihar borders) towards Ghaziabad city will be restricted. They will be rerouted via Chaudhary Charan Singh Marg towards UP Gate and thereafter along NH-9. Vehicles headed towards places like Haridwar, Amroha, Moradabad, Lucknow and so on will go through UP Gate, NH-9, Dasna Intersection, and then take the Eastern Peripheral Expressway to reach their destinations,” he added.
Vehicles on their way to Delhi from Baghpat will travel through Tronica City or Sonia Vihar. Those from Hapur and Bulandshahr and going towards Ghaziabad city via Dasna railway overbridge will be restricted. They will be diverted towards NH-9.
“Vehicles coming from Delhi and Hapur towards Ghaziabad city via Atmaram Steel Tiraha will be restricted as well. They will instead have to use NH-9,” the ADCP said.
“The movement of vehicles from the Loni border will be completely restricted. Those going from the Santosh Medical Cut (NH-9) towards Meerut Tiraha will be stopped too. The entry of heavy vehicles from Gaur Green, Khoda, Kalapatthar, Sector 62, Chhijarasi and Kanavani to Indirapuram via NH-9 will be diverted too,” the ADCP said.
“Vehicles coming from Hapur via Bhojpur and going towards Modinagar will have to take new routes as well. The entry of trucks on Gangnahar Patri Kanwad road, Pipeline road, NH- 34 (formerly NH-58) and DME will be restricted too. Those coming from Vasundhara flyover and going towards Mohannagar will be stopped too,” Singh said.
No pilgrim groups will be allowed to set up camps along NH-9 or DME. “Such camps will be allowed only on traditional routes and not on main roads. Such permissions are given by police,” he added.
A senior police officer said cops had received 214 applications for setting up kanwar camps. Of these, 116 camps have been approved so far.
