Ghaziabad: A group of councillors, mostly from non-BJP parties, are on an indefinite sit-in in protest against what they called the mayor's "unilateral and arbitrary" decision to postpone Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation's board meeting.
"The board meeting was scheduled for June 25 and the same was conveyed to the councillors. However, it was cancelled at the last moment," said Zakir Ali Saifi, a Samajwadi Party councillor from Kaila Bhatta area. "No reason has given and there is no word on the next date which shows the mayor's dictatorial attitude," said Saifi.
BSP councillor Babu Singh Arya said: "No one can work as per his or her whims and fancies. However, this is exactly what the mayor is doing."
Mayor Ashu Verma, meanwhile, has refuted the charge that he is acting in an undemocratic manner. "I am going by the book and as per rule, the board meeting could be convened only 92 hours after the executive meeting. Since the executive meeting ended on June 22, it was against the rule to convene board meeting on June 25."
Many proposals like fine on encroachment and littering are awaiting the board's approval.
