Win of Delhi people, defeat of 'hooliganism': CM Arvind Kejriwal on mayoral poll results

NEW DELHI: Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday praised the citizens of Delhi for AAP councilor Shelly Oberoi's victory in the mayoral election and criticized the BJP by stating that the people triumphed and the "goons" were vanquished.

In the inaugural gathering of the recently elected Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Shelly Oberoi, an AAP councilor, emerged victorious by defeating BJP councilor Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes in the race for the top post.

"The goons lost, the public won. In the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the people of Delhi won and hooliganism was defeated. Congratulations to the people of Delhi on Shelly Oberoi being elected mayor," Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi without naming anyone.

"I assure you all that I will run this House in a constitutional manner. I expect you all will maintain the dignity of the House and cooperate in its smooth functioning".

​First-time councillor from Delhi's East Patel Nagar ward, AAP’s Shelly Oberoi wins MCD mayoral polls.

She has worked as an assistant professor in Delhi University.

The 39-year-old councilor is also a lifetime member of Indian Commerce Association (ICA).

Shelly has received multiple awards at various conferences.

Shelly Oberoi defeated BJP's Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes to become the mayor of Delhi.

The councillor has been awarded both the 'Miss Kamla Rani Prize' and a scholarship for achieving the highest grade point average among all the students in the college.

Oberoi polled 150 votes while Gupta received 116 votes out of the total 266 votes polled.

The election of mayor took place in the backdrop of a Supreme Court order recently ruling against voting rights of 10 aldermen appointed by the Lt Governor VK Saxena.

Previous three attempts to elect Delhi mayor were fruitless with the AAP and BJP fighting it out in the MCD House meetings over the issue of appointment of protem mayor and aldermen.
