Smart ID cards for seniors to ensure emergency readiness
New Delhi: Delhi Police on Tuesday launched a safety initiative for senior citizens with the introduction of smart identity cards, each featuring a QR code containing the person's essential details, health issues and medications. At a special interaction programme called ‘Samvad', lieutenant governor V K Saxena distributed the specially designed ID cards to 400 senior citizens from across the city. "The QR code feature aims to provide critical information to emergency responders and healthcare providers, ensuring timely and effective assistance," he said.Emergency readiness is the primary focus, with key details like emergency contact numbers and doctors' phone numbers readily available on the card for quick access in critical situations. The cards are designed to be durable and resistant to wear and tear, making them compact and more user-friendly compared to paper-based cards."The digital integration through QR codes provides instant access to the senior citizen's medical details, enabling efficient and accurate assistance by healthcare providers or emergency responders," special commissioner of police Chhaya Sharma said, adding, "This enhanced safety feature minimises delays in providing necessary medical aid, potentially saving lives in critical scenarios."Stressing on data security, she said, "Medical and personal details accessible via QR codes reduce the visible sharing of sensitive information, ensuring privacy while enabling quick access to authorised personnel. This makes it easier for law enforcement and doctors to assist senior citizens effectively, especially in vulnerable situations."LG, who interacted with the senior citizens, said, "Most highlighted their concerns about the non-availability of ample affordable healthcare. The non-implementation of Ayushman Bharat in Delhi deprives many senior citizens of rightful benefits, and this was highlighted during the interaction."Two senior citizens were honoured during the programme. Roshan Lal Gupta (90), a retired defence auditor, was recognised for his remarkable fitness achievements, including mountain climbing at the age of 71. Colonel Y L Sood, a Vishisht Seva Medal recipient and veteran of the 1965 and 1971 wars, was acknowledged for his military service and post-retirement social contributions. The event featured comprehensive safety awareness sessions, including a cybersecurity briefing by ACP Manoj from the IFSO unit. Participants received educational materials covering various aspects of elderly care, including information about Alzheimer's disease and general safety guidelines. Delhi Police also highlighted the adoption of Kutumb app, launched a few months ago to ensure the safety of senior citizens. So far, about 65,000 people have registered on it. Delhi Police commissioner Sanjay Arora stressed the importance of maintaining close contact with beat constables, providing their contact numbers for emergency situations. Apart from Chhaya Sharma, special CPs Vivek Gogia and Garima Bhatnagar also participated in the event, along with representatives from various police districts. The senior citizen cell of Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC) coordinated the programme, which was attended by 150 police personnel from Delhi districts.
