Delhi smog scare goes global: Singapore and UK consulates tell citizens to mask up

NEW DELHI: The severe pollution in Delhi has prompted consulates to issue advisories to their citizens here.

The Singapore High Commission has urged people from that country in Delhi-NCR to follow the advice of Delhi authorities to stay indoors, especially children and those with respiratory and cardiac ailments, and to use masks when stepping out. The UK also issued an advisory for those travelling to north India.


In its advisory, Singapore said on Dec 13 that the Indian Central Pollution Control Board had invoked Stage IV, the highest level, of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), in the Delhi-NCR. "Under GRAP Stage IV, construction and industrial activities are heavily restricted, and schools and offices are encouraged to shift to a hybrid format. Delhi authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, especially children and those with respiratory or cardiac ailments, and to use masks if stepping out. In this regard, the high commission urges Singapore nationals in the Delhi-NCR to pay heed to this advice," it said.

It also spoke about the dense fog impacting flights. "Given the low visibility, flights to and from the Delhi National Capital Region are likely to be affected. Travellers should take note of this and check with the respective airlines," it said.

The UK said: "North Indian cities are most affected by extremely high levels of pollution. Children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions may be especially affected. If you're pregnant or have a respiratory or heart condition, you may wish to consult a medical practitioner before you travel." TNN
