Seva sandwiches whet appetite for altruism

NEW DELHI: With an array of delectable dishes and intricate embroidered clothes on offer,

Dilli Haat

had a new addition on Friday. A number of NGO stalls sprung up, offering different activities to people for

Daan Utsav

. As the ‘joy of giving’ week is slowly coming to an end, Dilli Haat will play host to a number of stalls over the weekend where volunteers and the public can take part in providing things for the needy.

Friday also saw seva sandwiches activities start at Dilli Haat with volunteers from the NGO iVolunteer making them on the spot. Volunteers first prepared a batch of close to 200 sandwiches, then embarked around the area to distribute them to labourers and the homeless. “Such activities should happen more often,” said

Kishan Kumar

, a daily wage labourer.

Public participation was welcomed by the NGO. Saransh Jain, a businessman who was unaware about Daan Utsav joined them. “It was great to help them. It is fulfilling to know the work you are doing will feed hungry stomachs,” he said.

Dhun Chhokar

, a seva sandwich coordinator said that close to 500 sandwiches were prepared on the first day. “More people are becoming aware about this and it is a fun way to take part in the joy of giving week,” said Chhokar. More seva sandwich activities are expected over the weekend in different parts of Delhi.
