NEW DELHI: Amid the ongoing legal dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore estate, Rani Kapur’s lawyer clarified that the “real fight” lies between
Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdeva Kapoor.
"This fight is really more between Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdeva – whether there is a will or there is no will etc. Rani Kapur does get impacted by it but she will file a response and you will know her stand," Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, representing Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur, told news agency ANI.
He explained that Rani Kapur had been named a defendant in the case as a class 1 heir, but her stance remains unchanged.
"She has been made defendant number 3 in her capacity as a class 1 heir of Sanjay Kapur. Now that the matters are coming to court, it would not be appropriate for me to give any further comments. But Mrs Kapur has been quite unequivocal in what her stand has been. It remains the same," he said.
On Wednesday, the Delhi high court issued notice in a civil suit filed by Karisma Kapoor’s children over their father’s estate, noting that the siblings had already received Rs 1,900 crore from the family trust. Justice Jyoti Singh directed Priya Sachdeva Kapur, Sunjay’s widow, to file a complete list of assets and respond to the claims.
The plaintiffs, represented by Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, alleged that Priya forged Sunjay’s will to claim control over his assets. They questioned its authenticity, noting it was unregistered, disclosed late, and read “in haste” at the Taj Hotel.
Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, for Priya, countered that the children are already trust beneficiaries. "It's not as if these people are left on the streets. I am a widow with a six-year-old child. For 15 years, they were nowhere to be seen," he argued.
Meanwhile, Rani Kapur intervened, voicing her concerns. "There's something unholy going on. I am 80 years old, concerned for my grandchildren. A trust set up by me has nothing for me? Despite repeated mails, I never received a copy of the will," she told the Court.
She also raised objections to the sale of Sona Comstar shares worth Rs 500 crore to a Singapore entity without her knowledge, urging the court to maintain the status quo.
The case will be taken up on October 9 for consideration of an ad-interim injunction.
