NEW DELHI: A
CISF constable deployed with a Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of the Metro railway security opened fire on his female colleague killing her instantly and then fired at himself with the AK-47 service rifle on a platform inside the Yamuna Bank Metro station on Friday morning. Both the constables were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where they were declared brought dead.
The Yamuna bank Metro railway police have registered a case.
Officers of Delhi Police and CISF said the deceased woman constable was identified as N V S Teja (22), originally a resident of west Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The male officer who triggered the incident has been identified as 24-year-old A V Madam Pillai, hailing from the Tuticorin region of Tamil Nadu. The incident was reported around 7.05 am on Friday just after as the Yamuna Bank Metro station was beginning to bustle with the morning travellers. “There was total commotion as the rifle shots ringed around us. We initially thought it was a terrorist as the man and woman were both talking to each other for ten minutes. We were asked to leave the platform initially but called back after the incident,’’ said Neeraj Gaur who works in a news agency and an eyewitness to the incident.
CISF spokesperson Rohit Katiyar said that that this was the first field posting for both the deceased, who were recruited in 2009. “Teja was staying at our Indirapuram camp while Pillai was residing at our Shastri Park camp. All women officers on the Dwarka-Anand Vihar/Noida line report at our Yamuna Bank unit after their duty hours. Then a bus drops them at Indirapuram. Teja had herself sought a meeting with Pillai after completing her duty at the New Ashok Nagar Metro station on Noida line on Friday morning,’’ said Katiyar.
Colleagues of the victims said that the two had known each other well. Teja had no weapon with her and Pillai was on duty when the incident took place. Both of them were in their uniform.
“We were a bit lucky as the shooting took place on the other side of a wall erected for displaying advertisements on the island between platforms 2 and 4 where trains from Anand Vihar and Noida stop on their way to Dwarka. The other platform is usually remains more crowded,’’ said a senior GRP official.
Katiyar said they had found seven empty shells fired from the AK-47. “Teja was at least shot five times but the exact count will be available only after we get the postmortem report,’’ said the spokesperson.
Talking to TOI, additional DCP (Railways) B S Gujjar said Teja and Pillai are were rushed to Walia Nursing at Laxmi Nagar where they were declared brought dead. “We have informed the family members of both the victims,’’ said Gujjar.
The DCP claimed that the police control room was informed abut the incident only after 7.20am.
“It is too early to draw any conclusion regarding the cause for Pillai’s action, and whether both the deceased were close to each other. We hope to know more about them after their families arrive in the city,’’ said Gijjar.
