NEW DELHI: Days after
Delhi police commissioner BK Gupta decided to crack down on incidents of chain snatching, robbery and motor theft in the city, police have decided to impose the stringent MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime) Act against all organized gangs.
According to sources, the decision was fast-tracked after police received information that several jailed gangsters from UP were planning to apply for bail or parole and then abscond.
A list of 139 criminals who may try to escape has been handed over to Tihar jail authorities.
Sources said an upcoming MHA meeting between police of neighbouring states in Delhi will focus on how to neutralize these gangs. “Recent history shows that a lot of inter-state gangs are committing crimes here and then hiding in UP, Uttarakhand and Haryana. Not only will we discuss how police can co-ordinate with their counterparts in other states to nab these gangs, we will also begin to profile each criminal and note the areas in which they operate. We will update all the data on most wanted criminals and when they are arrested, they will be charged under MCOCA if necessary,’’ added the source.
“Issues having inter-state ramifications will be discussed in detail as the MHA has emphasized that police must share all information about various crimes and criminals with their counterparts in other states. The meeting will also discuss options such as joint raids and interrogation of accused involved in inter-state crimes. Other issues that will be taken up include inter-state gun-running rackets that pose a threat to our final preparations for Independence Day celebrations,” said the spokesperson of the Ghaziabad police on Tuesday.
Police said that they have made good progress in the Krishna Nagar Gaurav Gambhir murder case. “Salim, Sohrab and Rustam will not get away this time. We have collected details about the gang and will file a chargesheet under MCOCA. We are in constant touch with the UP Police. The Afsar-Naushad and Neeraj-Ranjit gangs will also be slapped with MCOCA,’’ said a source at the police headquarters.
