new delhi: even as doctors fight to make organ donation a success, the activities of some doctors and recipients, come as a big setback to the entire effort. a 21-year-old rickshaw puller in lucknow, akram raza, was deprived of his kidney, two years ago through fraudulent means. even though the young man is trying his level best to bring the people to book, justice has eluded him.
raza says, a senior official in the telecom department met raza in lucknow and promised to get him a decent job, provided he came to delhi. he also was told that raza would have to undergo a medical examination for the job. though reluctant and scared of leaving his city, raza was persuaded by other rickshawpullers not to miss a chance of a lifetime. raza was taken by the official to a number of cities in haryana and punjab and finally to jullundhar. there, he was admitted to a hospital for a medical test. when the young man woke up a couple of days later, he was told by a nurse that his kidney had been removed. the incident took place in april 1998. raza managed to reach lucknow where he contacted a doctor who took up the matter with local authorities. when nothing moved, raza came to delhi last year and lodged a complaint with the national human rights commission (nhrc). the nhrc filed a case and asked punjab and the uttar pradesh governments to file their replies on the incident. the response from the punjab government was raza had donated the kidney on his own accord, while the up government is keeping silent. a class ii dropout, raza says he was made to sign some papers at the hospital which he did not understand. it were these papers which said that he has donated his kidney on his free will. raza says the nhrc has written to the up government at least seven times and still there is no response. he says that the nhrc has pleaded helplessness by saying that unless the state government replies, nhrc also can''t do much.
