LG visits traffic police HQ, pushes AI-based enforcement in Delhi

New Delhi: Lieutenant governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has called for a better visibility of police personnel while visiting Delhi Traffic Police headquarters in Todapur, with a focus on technology-driven enforcement, congestion management and public engagement.

During the review, Sandhu examined the progress made in the Digital Enforcement framework and stressed the need to scale up the use of artificial intelligence. “AI-enabled systems, supervised by personnel, can ensure round-the-clock transparent monitoring and enable more scientific management of peak-hour traffic, bringing Delhi closer to global smart city standards,” he said.

Sandhu noted that traffic snarls not only lead to loss of productive hours but also contributes to fuel wastage and vehicular emissions.

The LG directed the traffic police to increase their visibility on roads, particularly at congestion-prone stretches, and ensure strict enforcement against violations such as wrong-side driving, overspeeding, lane jumping and non-compliance with helmet and seat belt rules. “Visible enforcement acts as a deterrent and helps maintain smoother traffic flow,” he said.

Emphasising that traffic management is a shared responsibility, Sandhu called for deeper collaboration with stakeholders, including RWAs, market associations and youth groups, to address local bottlenecks and parking issues more effectively.

Later, the LG flagged off new disaster management vehicles and a fleet of scooters for women traffic personnel. He also felicitated “Traffic Praharis”, citizen volunteers supporting traffic management efforts.

Reviewing the Digital Challan System, he emphasised that leveraging technology for transparent and effective enforcement will foster a culture of self-discipline among commuters.
