NEW DELHI: The southeast district police arrested a supreme court lawyer who allegedly murdered a senior UP police Special Operation Group (SOG) official after the latter objected to the accused's illicit relationship with his wife. The accused has been identified as Bharat Kumar Tomar (35). Cops arrested the accused, who had fled from Muzaffarnagar in UP, after committing the alleged murder on April 3.
The incident took place near the civil lines area of Muzaffarnagar and led to a lot of unrest that led the UP police to declare a reward of Rs 5000 on the arrest of the accused.
"We received information on April 20 that a person was creating nuisance in a drunken state near Sahi Temple, MB Road. Policemen soon reached the spot and found Bharat Kumar there. While the accused was being examined, he boasted that he had came to know that UP Police had declared a reward of Rs 5,000 on his arrest," said joint CP (southeast) V S Chahal.
"The revelation was surprising and it was immediately conveyed to Mahipal Singh, ACP Ambedkar Nagar sub-division. Tomar was then brought in for questioning. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he was a lawyer. He spent his childhood at police quarters in the civil lines area of Muzaffarnagar. During that period, he got friendly with a girl, Reshma, residing in the same neighborhood. The accused then moved to Delhi to prepare for the civil services examination. After three unsuccessful attempts, he went back to Muzaffarnagar and found that Reshma had been married to Shakir Khan, a constable in UP police," said Chahal.
"When he met Reshma, their love was ignited and soon an affair started. Both then decided to get rid of Shakir Khan. Soon they got a chance and shot him to death," Chahal added.
During investigation of the case, the accused Reshma was arrested and is currently in judicial custody in Muzaffarnagar.
