New Delhi: BJP's
Vijay Goel demanded 85% reservation for Delhi students in DU colleges on Sunday. He also asked the government to plan a common eligibility test for undergraduate admissions in Delhi University colleges, to make the process more consistent.
"It is very sad that students who have studied in Delhi and are doing well don't find a seat in a college in their home state. The parents are then forced to send them to other states and costly private institutions," the BJP parliamentarian said.
DU offers 54,000 seats for the 2.23 lakh students who have passed the Class XII exams this year. But as a number of seats are reserved, students from Delhi end up getting less than 50% of the seats.
"At most 20,000 seats are filled up by Delhi students. Therefore, as the first step, we propose 85% reservation in the 12 colleges wholly funded by the government. Otherwise a 5% relaxation in the cutoff for Delhi aspirants should be introduced," said Goel.
Goel also highlighted the issue of cheating in Class XII examinations in several state boards and the lack of uniformity across education boards. "We propose a common eligibility test to weed out students who may have used unfair means to get high percentage in state boards," he added.
According to Virendra Singh, president of Delhi Parents' Association, marksheets should be stringently checked to prevent students from using unfair means or fake marksheets to get into DU colleges.
Goel also said that he met education minister Manish Sisodia last week to submit a memorandum of demands and would meet HRD minister Smriti Irani soon
