New Delhi: The ratio of women receiving an organ, either through a deceased or living donor, vis-à-vis men in the country saw an improvement in 2022.Between 1995 and 2021, government data shows, the male-female ratio in terms of number of recipients was 4:1. In 2022, it came down to 2.36: 1.In a written reply to a Parliament question on the issue, minister of state for health Satya Pal Singh Baghel said that out of a total of 36,640 transplants done from deceased and living donors, 29,695 were done on male and 6,945 were done on females during the period from 1995 to 2021, which is approximately four transplants done on male against one transplant done on female.“In order to narrow down the trend of gender disparity in organ transplants, the ministry of health and family welfare has been conducting regular awareness/sensitisation sessions and activities on various ethical aspects of organ donation and transplantation for different stakeholders, namely state govt representatives, legal representatives, police personnel, non-governmental organisations, healthcare professionals of institutions/hospitals, etc,” Baghel added.
