NEW DELHI:

Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin

’s son

Syed Shahid Yousuf

was among the

18 prisoners

injured in a scuffle with security guards in

Tihar Jail

, prison authorities told home ministry in a report. Yousuf is in jail in connection with terror funding cases.

The 18 prisoners, including Yousuf, were injured when Tamil Nadu special forces personnel intervened after one of their physically challenged officers was assaulted by three inmates in Tihar’s jail No.1 during routine checking on the night of November 21.

The commandant of the Tamil Nadu special forces battalion deployed in Tihar has been asked to conduct a separate probe and take action against those found negligent, the official said.

Quoting the Tihar jail report, the official said three prisoners, including a Kashmiri, were found to be in possession of unauthorised material and when Tamil Nadu special forces sub-inspector Muthu Pandee tried to remove them, the inmates resisted and assaulted him.

On Tuesday, J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti had called up home secretary Rajiv Gauba to enquire about the Tihar incident. She asked Gauba about social media reports on the alleged assault of Kashmiri prisoners and urged him to ensure their safety.

“A prison is considered to be the safest place but the alleged incidents that have come to light put a question mark on it,” she said in a statement.
