Heavy rainfall cools down Delhi-NCR after intense heat

After enduring sweltering heat, with nine heatwave days in june, Delhi-NCR experienced a significant drop in temperature thanks to heavy rainfall. The showers brought much-needed relief from the hot and humid conditions that had prevailed in the region.

Various parts of Delhi-NCR, including RK Puram, Sarita Vihar, Khan Market, Munirka, and Noida, witnessed heavy showers. The rainfall started in the morning, marking a pleasant break from the rising temperatures.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert, predicting heavy rain and thunderstorms across parts of Delhi. The alert also mentioned strong winds, with speeds reaching 20-30km per hour, expected to sweep through the city throughout the day.

The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 28.6 degrees Celsius. The IMD forecasts suggest that the rainy weather will persist in Delhi until july 1, with the maximum temperature anticipated to be around 39 degrees Celsius. The forecast also indicates a gradual decrease in maximum temperatures throughout the week.

According to IMD officials, the intensity of the rainfall is expected to increase over the coming days. Moderate rainfall is expected on friday and saturday, with chances of moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, on Sunday, June 30.

Mahesh Palawat, vice-chairman of meteorology and climate change at Skymet, suggested that the monsoon might arrive between june 28 and june 30. This prediction aligns with the typical monsoon arrival window in Delhi, which is between june 27 and june 29.

The monsoon's arrival this year is closely watched, especially considering the previous year's early arrival on june 26 and the initial showers recorded on june 30, 2022. This year's rainfall pattern is keenly observed for its impact on the region's climate and weather conditions.
