Gramin Seva vehicles on electric path to revival

New Delhi: Delhi govt is set to revive the Gramin Seva auto service by introducing guidelines to facilitate their conversion to electric vehicles.A Delhi govt official said the transport department had received representations from the union requesting issuance of the guidelines. The union held meetings with department officials and urged steps to inject a new lease of life into the services. "The proposal is under the active consideration of the transport department. We will take a decision soon," the official said.Initiated in 2010, the Gramin Seva scheme introduced high-capacity three-wheelers with permits to operate in Delhi's rural areas, unauthorised colonies, resettlement colonies and JJ clusters. These vehicles, which can accommodate up to six passengers, play a crucial role in providing last-mile connectivity in these areas.Officials said there were about 6,000 registered Gramin Seva autos, but over time, a significant number ceased operations. Currently, the rural areas are served by about 2,000-3,000 such autos.During the meeting, union representatives raised the issue of permits, which have reduced drastically. They also demanded steps to check illegal proliferation of e-rickshaws and subsidy on the purchase of EVs. An official said that in the next EV policy, incentives could be announced for electric Gramin Seva vehicles.However, some officials pointed out that many of the Gramin Seva vehicles flout regulations by overloading. "We have complaints that many carry more than double the passengers permitted," an official said.
