NEW DELHI: Highlighting the sanitation crisis that is fast developing in

Azadpur

fruits and vegetable market, Delhi government’s minister of development has urged lieutenant governor Anil Baijal to intervene in the matter and direct the north corporation to make alternative arrangements for disposal of garbage produced by the market.

The civic body had discontinued the earlier arrangement to allow the dumping from Azadpur market in Bhalswa landfill site after the massive Ghazipur landfill collapse earlier last month. “Just like Ghazipur, the Bhalswa site too had run out of its capacity in 2007 but in the absence of any alternative site, almost 3000MT garbage continues to be dumped here. Discontinuation was a part of a host of measures taken to reduce load on Bhalswa landfill,” a senior North Delhi Muncipal corporation official said.

After the prohibition, it was decided to dump the waste at a site owned by the market in

was supposed to turn it into organic compost. But stiff resistance from villagers has so far prevented the disposal.

“In such a situation, the garbage issue in Azadpur has taken the form of a serious sanitation crisis as the garbage is piling up in various receptacles across the market. This can lead to epidemic and spread of diseases,” a letter by the minister to

reads urging him to intervene. “I urge you to direct the commissioner of north corporation to reinstate the earlier arrangement at Bhalswa until a suitable solution is found,” it says.

A senior official from north corporation said that they are themselves struggling to find an alternative site for Bhaswa which is now way beyond the prescribed height.
