Girl dies, 7 hurt as car hits 3 other vehicles in north Delhi

NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old

girl

died and seven others were injured after the

car

in which they were travelling hit three other

vehicles

. The incident was reported from north Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla early on Tuesday when the teenagers were heading back home after celebrating the birthday of a friend, Dev, who was also travelling with them.

Around 1.45 am, a passerby called the PCR about the incident. A police team rushed the victims to a hospital where the girl, Priya Shukla, was declared brought dead. Four of the injured, including Dev, are in a critical condition.

The friends left a party hall in the area around 1.25 am. Since one of the teens lived nearby, they started driving Dev’s Tata Hexa on the wrong side of the road. They hit a delivery van parked along the road after moving barely a few metres. Three of a family — identified as Mohammad Mustafa, his wife Wahida Khatun and their five-year-old son Ahsraf — who were sleeping inside the van, were injured in the incident.

The impact of the hit was such that Dev’s car lost balance and rammed an i20 crossing past the delivery van. There were three youths travelling inside the i20, later identified as Mohammad Zuber, Naim and Akub. The Hexa then rammed a stationary truck, after which it turned turtle.

A senior police officer said that the car was so damaged that one of its doors had to be cut open to extricate the injured. CCTV footage from the area is being scanned to ascertain the sequence of events. Shukla was a resident of Burari and had given a year’s gap in studies to prepare for government exams.
