Gang steals jewellery amid metro station rush, 5 held
New Delhi: Amid the rush at the New Delhi metro station entry gate, a commuter realised her gold bangles, earrings and mangalsutra had been stolen after a crowd that had gathered around her thinned out.
Police said the theft was carried out by an organised gang of five women, aged between 20 and 40. One member would identify and follow the target, while others briefly crowded around them. In the confusion, they would swiftly remove jewellery without raising suspicion. All five women, residents of Anand Parbat, were identified and arrested.
DCP (metro) Bharat Reddy said, “The case was registered on April 4 at Kashmere Gate Metro police station following the victim’s complaint. Stolen items included gold bangles, earrings, a chain, stud earrings and a mangalsutra.”
Police said teams from the Special Staff Metro and local police analysed footage from the station and nearby areas, which helped track the accused. Multiple raids were conducted, resulting in the arrest of Lakshmi (40), Sardha (30), Soniya (28), Naina (26) and Priyanka (20).
During interrogation, the women allegedly admitted to targeting commuters in crowded public places, particularly metro stations, to commit theft. Police said the stolen jewellery has been recovered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain their involvement in other similar cases.
