NEW DELHI: Fatal accidents on city roads saw a decline of around 4.7% from January to October this year in comparison with last year, data shared by the Delhi Traffic Police has shown.
In 2022, out of the 4,646accidents, 1,197 of them were fatal, resulting in the loss of 1,225 lives. This year, there were 4,803 reported accidents till last month, and 1,141 of them were classified asfatal, causing 1,175 deaths on the road.
In 2023, there was a 4.7% reduction in the total number of fatal accidents, which led to a 3.3% decrease in the number of persons killed compared to 2022.
SS Yadav, special commissioner of police, traffic, said: “From 2019 to 2022, Delhi witnessed a positive road safety trend because of the efforts of Delhi Traffic Police. In 2019, 1,433 fatal accidents claimed 1,463 lives and led to 5,152 injuries, prompting proactive measures. In 2020, fatal accidents had reduced to 1,163.”
The officer added that female casualties had decreased, and the total number of injuries had declined to 3,662.
“In 2021, the trend continued with 1,206 fatal accidents, lowering the death toll to 1,239. In 2022, while fatal accidents slightly increased to 1,428, the number of people killed was 1,461,” Yadav said.
The comparison of fortnightly data for fatal accidents and persons killed in 2022 and 2023 revealed a mixed trend. In 2023, there was a slight increase in fatal accidents in the early months of the year, mainly January and February compared to the same period in 2022. However, as the year progressed, the number of fatal accidents in 2023 began to decrease, particularly during the secondquarter from April to June.
Conversely, the numberof persons killed in 2023 remained relatively consistent or decreased slightly compared to 2022, indicating thatthe severity of accidents might have been lower. Notably, the second quarter of 2023 witnessed a reductionin both fatal accidents anddeath toll.
Delhi Traffic Police over the last few years has taken up various measures, including prosecution for reckless and drunken driving, a robust enforcement policy, real-time data analysis and driver education and training programs. Traffic personnel also hold meetings from time to time with other stakeholders to ensure that issues are dealt with in a time-bound manner.

Two women, five-year-old girl killed in accident
Two women and a five-year-old girl were killed and three others injured in a road accident on the old Mumbai-Pune highway in Lonavla. The accident occurred when a container truck hit two motorcycles carrying two families. The truck driver lost control while negotiating a turn, resulting in the collision. The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Lonavla, and a case is being registered against the truck driver. The victims were identified as Savita Ganesh Laygude, Lata Nagesh Dhume, and her daughter Ovi.
Four of family from MP killed in road accident in Rajasthans Bundi
A family of four from Madhya Pradesh, including a couple, were killed in a road accident in Rajasthan's Bundi district. The accident occurred when their SUV crashed into a truck on NH 52 near Hindoli town. The SUV was likely speeding and the truck may have suddenly stopped, causing the collision. Three family members died at the scene, while the woman died in the hospital. The truck driver fled the scene, but the police have seized the vehicle and are searching for the driver.
