EDMC to hire consultant to flatten Ghazipur’s slopes

is planning to hire a consultant to prepare an action plan for stabilising the slopes of Ghazipur

landfill site

The project will be awarded to a

private agency

through engineering, procurement and construction mode. “Since there is no space left for dumping waste, the garbage is being dumped in an upward direction due to which the height of the landfill site has increased more than 60 meters and the side slopes have become more steep and dangerous.

has decided to undertake the work of stabilising the slopes on EPC mode,” said senior official from east civic body.

After the landslide incident last year, experts were hired from IIT-Delhi to help EDMC in stabilising the slopes. Although the plan was to stop dumping of garbage at the site, due to the unavailability of land, a new plan was formulated to stabilise the slopes in a bid to ensure that such incidents do not reoccur.

As per the suggestions, the slopes will now be flattened. Experts pointed out that the current situation of the landfill site is dangerous and slopes are unstable. “The capacity of

landfill site was exhausted in 2000 and presently the garbage is stacked to over 65 meters above ground, which has become a continuing danger to persons working at site as well as in the locality,” the report observed.

The private agency will carry out the slope stability analysis and take all stabilisation measures as instructed by IIT-Delhi. “The agency will develop a system for excavating additional waste and its segregation and develop infrastructure for storage of the segregated materials,” added the senior official.

Senior officials claimed the work for flattening of slopes will be completed within a year and if any land is allotted to EDMC, then work for developing a scientific landfill site will also be initiated.
