NEW DELHI: The first transgender candidate to contest the MCD polls emerged victorious in the results announced on Wednesday. Bobi was fielded by AAP from the Sultanpuri-A ward.

With a margin of 6,714 votes, the 38-year-old defeated Congress candidate Varuna Dhaka in this constituency.

Stressing that concentrating on development work in her ward was her first priority, Bobi said, “The people of the area have given their mandate and blessings to me. They were the ones who encouraged and supported me. There is a lot of pending work that needs to be taken care of as it was neglected earlier.”

“For instance, beautifying the lanes, ensuring proper sanitation, making the ward garbage-free, and improving parks are a few of the immediate concerns. There are things which were not done by the previous councillors and focusing on those is more important at the moment,” she explained.

Now victorious, the candidate once had to drop out of school due to name-calling and dance and sing at social events following which she joined an NGO where she received an education.

A resident of the Sultanpur area, as a social worker, Bobi has worked for underprivileged and transgender persons.

Having been involved in social work and activism for over a decade now, Bobi said that it was important to also increase awareness among the transgender community.

“While this society has chosen me, the transgender community is also an important aspect. Now that I have won, I would like to make them more aware and give them hope that this is also a path. Maybe even they can involve themselves in social work and then get a similar opportunity like me,” Bobi said.
